FRANCK, C.CHAUSSON

FRANCK, C.: Symphony in D Minor / CHAUSSON, E.: Symphony in B-Flat Major (Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Tingaud) César Franck’s only symphony came at a time when the French music world was seeking to rival the great Austro-German tradition. The ‘darkness-to-light’ narrative of the Symphony in D minor owes a debt to Beethoven and there is a unique power within its distinctive themes, innovative cyclic form and general gravitas. Franck’s student Ernest Chausson was no doubt inspired by his teacher’s thematic metamorphoses, but the anguished influence of Wagner is also ever present. The published score of the Symphony in B flat major includes many errors which conductor Jean-Luc Tingaud has meticulously corrected after careful study of Chausson’s autograph manuscripts. POULENC, F.

Biches Suite (Les) / Les animaux modèles Suite / Sinfonietta (Ireland RTÉ National Symphony, Tingaud) Poulenc wrote two ballets, the suites from which feature on this recording. Fusing together musical styles from various periods and genres enabled him to construct the largely plot-free narrative of Les Biches, a sequence of captivating dances that explore many themes which were considered taboo at the time. In Les Animaux modèles, Poulenc transforms the animals of La Fontaine’s fables into human characters in a patchwork score brimming with colour, wit and self-borrowings. The Sinfonietta is playful and light-hearted. INDY, V. d’

Symphony No. 2 / Souvenirs / Istar (Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Tingaud) Vincent d’Indy is one of the most important yet neglected figures in French musical history. Though he was celebrated as a teacher, his eclectic yet inventive orchestral music has taken longer to secure him fame. The Symphony No. 2 in B flat major has a powerful architectural design within which tensions between tradition and innovation are played out, and through which the composer draws on folk motifs and his religious faith alike. The powerful, grief-laden symphonic poem Souvenirs was dedicated to the memory of his late wife whilst Istar is a majestic series of variations. The Prelude to Fervaal, his first opera, reveals atmospheric Wagnerian writing. [edgtf_button size="" type="outline" text="ALBUM REVIEW"...

FRANCK, C.

Psyché (version for choir and orchestra) / Le Chasseur maudit / Les Éolides (RCS Voices, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Tingaud) César Franck was a childhood prodigy who gained later renown as an organist and teacher. His compositions received scant attention until the success of Le Chasseur maudit, a symphonic morality tale that vividly portrays the ‘accursed huntsman’ from his defiance of the Sabbath to a dramatic chase and a horrific fate. Les Éolides is infused with Wagnerian colours and depicts the mythological Aeolids as they reawaken nature with their song. Franck’s lushly orchestrated final symphonic poem Psyché expresses the power of love in dreams and a passionate union. DUKAS, P.

Symphony in C Major / L'apprenti sorcier / La Peri (Ireland RTÉ National Symphony, Tingaud) Paul Dukas is famed for his brilliant, meticulously scored symphonic scherzo The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, first performed in 1897, which almost immediately entered the international repertoire. It was subsequently the focus of a ballet and later Walt Disney’s film Fantasia. Magical scoring is also a feature of La péri, a poème dansé of great imaginative verve. The delightful, colourful Symphony in C was composed mid-way between these works. For this recording, manuscript sources for the three works were consulted, including the hitherto private proofs of the first edition of The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, ensuring rigorously faithful performances. BIZET, G.

Roma / Marche Funèbre / Patrie Overture / Petite Suite (Ireland RTÉ National Symphony, Tingaud) The success of Bizet’s opera Carmen has overshadowed the rest of his output, but this fascinating orchestral programme, which includes a number of seldom performed works, reveals more of his talent for writing colourful, atmospheric and melodic music. The Overture in A was Bizet’s first orchestral work and unperformed in his lifetime, while the Marche funèbre was originally the prelude to an opera about love and vengeance, now lost. The dramatic overture Patrie captures the mood following the Franco-Prussian war of 1870–71, while the Petite suite is a set of orchestrations of movements from Jeux d’enfants (Children’s Games). Conceived in Italy as a symphony, after Bizet had won the Prix de...
