Jean-Luc Tingaud Portrait About

About

Jean-Luc Tingaud is a conductor of international acclaim, known for his dynamic presence on both the symphonic and operatic stages.

A graduate of the Paris National Conservatoire, he was mentored by Manuel Rosenthal, a pupil of Maurice Ravel, who instilled in him a lifelong passion for French music — a repertoire Tingaud has become one of the foremost interpreters of today.

Conducting symphonic music has always been one of Jean-Luc Tingaud’s primary interests. In recent years, Tingaud has focused extensively on symphonic music, producing a major series of recordings for Naxos. These include works by Dukas (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, La Péri, Symphony in C), Bizet (Roma, Patrie, Jeux d’enfants, among others), and Poulenc (Les Biches, Sinfonietta, Les Animaux modèles) with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin. With the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, he has recorded music by d’Indy (including Symphony No. 2), César Franck (symphonic poems including the complete Psyché), and Massenet (featuring his only symphonic poem, Visions).

His most recent releases include the symphonies of César Franck and Chausson with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and a two-CD set of Gabriel Fauré’s complete orchestral works, commemorating the centenary of the composer’s death. Altogether, his symphonic recordings for Naxos encompass more than twenty major works, affirming his stature as one of today’s leading interpreters of French orchestral music.

Jean-Luc Tingaud About Photo Philarmonie

Tingaud’s repertoire extends well beyond the French canon. He is deeply engaged with contemporary music and has collaborated with several leading composers, including conducting the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s final symphonic work. His curiosity and musical sensitivity make him a compelling advocate for new music and rare repertoire alike.

Since 2019, Tingaud has served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Beethoven Academy Orchestra in Krakow, one of Poland’s leading ensembles. His partnership with the orchestra has produced critically acclaimed performances and recordings, and continues to flourish. In December 2025, they are slated to embark on a major tour of China, performing in eight of the country’s most prestigious venues.

Tingaud has conducted many of Europe’s and Asia’s top orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, Tokyo Philharmonic, and the Warsaw and Krakow Philharmonics. He made his London debut at the Barbican in 2004 with the English Chamber Orchestra, joined by soloists Joshua Bell and Steven Isserlis.

While symphonic music has played a significant role in his career, Tingaud has also built a distinguished operatic profile. Since 2001, he has been a regular guest at the Wexford Festival, where, amongst other things, he has conducted Massenet’s Sapho, Fauré’s Pénélope, and Chabrier’s Le Roi malgré lui. Other engagements have included Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, Werther at the Festival della Valle d’Itria in Martina Franca, La Damnation de Faust in Reims, Pelléas et Mélisande and Carmen at the Opéra de Toulon, Le Siège de Corinthe at the Rossini Festival in Wildbad, Faust at the Macerata Festival, The Turn of the Screw at the Opéra de Lille, L’Heure espagnole with l’Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Paris, Dialogues des carmélites, Madama Butterfly and La bohème for Pittsburgh Opera, Pelléas et Mélisande at the Prague National Theatre, The Pearl Fishers for English National Opera, Roméo et Juliette at the Arena di Verona, La Fille du régiment at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Die Entführung aus dem Serail for The Grange Festival and Carmen at the New National Theatre Tokyo.
